AutoMotor and Sport has rendered the next-generation F30 3-Series due out in 2012. We are already aware that the next-gen 3-Series will feature shorter overhangs but at the same time feature a wheelbase that is longer by 1.5 inches over the outgoing model. All the worries about the styling need to be put to rest as this rendering is a bit revolutionary. It features the ‘Pushing Nose’ design that is very prominent on the current Z4 while the hood design and lines will be a mix of both the Z4 and the F10 5-Series. The design stays aggressive with flowing lines but we do miss Bangle’s trademark flame surfacing.
The longer wheelbase endows the F30 3-Series with more interior room, especially at the rear. The next-gen X3 that we featured a couple of days ago is based on an all new 3-Series platform that will underpin the F30. BMW will load the 3 with the latest Efficient Dynamics technologies from active aerodynamics, solar roof panel, brake energy regeneration, stop-start, engine/gearbox/differential pre-heating and aerodynamically designed wheels. The rest of the technologies from the i-Drive to the climate control to telematics will be completely re-engineered.
BMW will equip the new 3 will a new range of turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Even a hybrid is expected which is rumoured to be followed by an all electric 3. The F30 will see the introduction of a new body style – a GT. The 3 Series GT will make its debut along with the sedan, coupe, convertible and a touring. The F30 will be a radical new design than an evolution, especially since the competition is really hotting up in the marketplace.
BMW’s 3-Series Executive has been doing extremely well in India after its launch at around Rs 24 lakhs Ex-Showroom. BMW has taken the lead in the sales department from Mercedes Benz which briefly led during January 2010. The F 30 3-Series will be launched sometime in 2012 in India and will be a CKD to keep costs in check.
