Audi to double sales by adding second shift

German Automaker Audi will add a second shift to its existing plant in Aurangabad to double its sales by 2015. Audi’s current capacity is 2,000 which the automaker plant to increase to 3,000 units next year. Audi’s sales in 2010 stand at 1,876 in the first eight months and targets 2,700 unit sales this year.  Michael Perschke, who heads Indian operations of Audi, said the brand is not desperately chasing bigger rivals BMW and Mercedes. “We would prefer to be the most aspirational brand rather than a market leader in volumes. We were the last to enter India, but the growth has been faster than expectations,” he said.

Audi aims total sales of 6,000 by 2015. Aiding sales will be the new Audi A8 coming by the end of this year and the A7 Sportback for which market study is already underway. Also on the way are SUVs like the upcoming Q3. Audi’s SUVs, the Q5 and Q7 outsell the entire luxury SUV segment put together. To further aid sales, they started local assembly of the Q5 recently.
