With the ongoing financial crisis and December being the last month of the year, there are a lot of discounts (from Rs10,000 to well over Rs1.5 lakhs) if you are on the lookout for a car. However, highly successful cars like the Swift, Dzire, Fortuner, Endeavour sell at their own price with huge waiting periods. Most of the other cars come with a discount though. Frontline companies like Maruti, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Ford and General Motors along with the dealers and financiers have stepped up promotions, incentives, loyalty bonuses, cash rebates and other deals this month to clear 2009 inventory. We have deals offered by most customers and the rest are in the process of finalising their offers before announcing them.

Dont be disheartened that your dream car is not on the list. Many other manufacturers like Fiat are offering sweet deals, Just ring up their showrooms and get to know them. Also, the arrival of Bharat Stage IV norms and the price hike in January 2010 will boost sales during the last month of 2009. “Customers book their cars in December and take delivery in January to get a new year registration,” said a Mumbai based Hyundai dealer.
Most dealers are holding inventory in the range of 25-30 days. Car manufacturers are also going slow on production this month with most initiating plant shutdowns to take care of inventory levels. Though hit by recession, 2009 has been by far the best year for vehicle sales so far. In the first seven months of this year (April to October), over 10.5 lakh passenger vehicles (cars and MUVs) have been sold, a growth of 16% with the compact segment (comprising the Zen, Alto, Wagon R, Palio, Indica and Santro) recording maximum growth. Car manufacturers say that 2009-10 will continue to see an average 15% growth in passenger vehicles, targeting a total sales of 2 mn vehicles.
