Chevrolet Beat (Spark for our international readers) is all set to get an electric motor under it’s hood. Earlier this year Chevrolet India had previewed a concept of Beat EV in New Delhi. But company has ruled out all possibilities to commercialize the electric motor fitted Spark/Beat. Few days before Chevrolet had released details of an electric motor which supposed to power up Chevrolet Spark/Beat EV. But company did not release any image of the car, our friends at Youcarpress.com has managed to spy the Spark EV from factory and post a 4 minutes long video on Youtube.
Chevrolet Beat EV is an all electric vehicle powered by an 85 KW electric motor, which provides 114HP maximum power. The battery pack will consists of latest nanophosphate lithium-ion batteries. Chevrolet has not disclosed other details related to performance of Beat/Spark EV.
Recently the new generation Beat was unveiled. GM has been fitted electric motor on current generation Beat, at mass production stage the new body shell may come into picture. The charging socket has been hidden beneath the camouflage in driver side fender.
Company will market Spark/Beat EV in select U.S. and global markets in 2013. GM may start with very small numbers initially and later ramp up the volumes.
“Electric motor development and manufacturing is another area of expertise we’ll need as we expand vehicle electrification technologies to address the needs of our customers around the world,” said Larry Nitz, GM Executive Director of Vehicle Electrification Engineering.
So how about Chevrolet Beat EV’s Indian arrival? As of now considering the poor state of infrastructure, GM India will not bring it to our market. Companies like Chevrolet, Tata and Mahindra-Reva are seriously exploring the opportunities in electric vehicle segment. Even the government has set up two committees to study and suggest infrastructure requirement for better penetration of electric vehicles. Hopefully 4-5 years down the line, when battery technologies are proven and affordable and backed up with a strong infrastructure, we may see Chevrolet Beat EV in our roads as well.
