Electric Zoyte (Premier Rio) to hit US roads

The Premier Rio has been racking up decent sales in India. While the Rio is powered by an archaic Peugeot TU D5 diesel engine, its Chinese counterpart has got a new Electric powertrain. Produced by China’s Zotye Holding Group, the new Zoyte EV SUV has a range of 250 miles and a top speed of 70mph. While that sounds like a tall claim provided that the Nissan Leaf only manages 100 miles on a single charge with a top speed of 87mph. The claims get taller when you hear that the Zoyte comes with a 3-year 36,000Km bumper-bumper warranty in addition to the lithium-ion battery pack which is warranted for 185,000 miles. The price for all this? The Chinese say that the highway-legal SUV will retail for just $ 29,995 (approx Rs 15 lakhs) when it hits USA by the end of 2010.

The vehicles will be imported by Green Automotive and distributed to the Rohrman Auto dealerships located in Indiana and Illinois and hope to sell 200 of these Zoyte EVs every month. In addition, EV Car Co. will also sell the Zotye SUV at its 14 Texas-based dealerships
