Ferrari have come up with a new design for their wheel nuts for use in their F10 car for the 2010 season. Williams have hinted recently that tyre pitstops could last a maximum of 3 seconds which calls for a very quick fastening mechanism for the tyres. Ferrari seem to be the only team at the moment to have come up with such a mechanism but we never know, all the teams might have something of their own.
Spain’s El Pais newspaper reports that Ferrari has designed a cone-shaped nut that integrates better with the wheel gun. The nut also features the automatic triggering of its fastener, where previously it needed to be pulled manually by a mechanic. “We have worked over the winter to speed up the process of changing tyres,” said designer Nikolas Tombazis.
Look closely at the picture to spot the new cone shaped wheel nut.
