The much awaited Sports version of the Grande Punto will be launched by the end of June. The world is changing and part of the proof comes from the fact that the new Grande Punto Sport will not sport a turbocharged Petrol engine like its European counterparts but a diesel. You heard it right, and not any diesel, the 1.3 Multijet with Variable Geometry turbocharger that produces 90bhp that also does duty in the Linea. The Punto Sport will come with lot of kit as standard like an electric sunroof, sports upholstery, a rear spoiler, racing decals, blacked-out headlamps, bigger tyres, dual tone interiors and lots more. The addition of so much kit will push up the price and we expect it to retail around Rs 6.5-7 lakhs.
The Linea T-Jet petrol will come by the end of this year. It will sport a 1.4L Turbocharged engine producing 120ps @ 5000rpm and a healthy 206Nm from just 1750rpm. Both the Linea T-Jet and the Punto Sport were showcased at the Auto Expo 2010. The official spokesperson of the company, when contacted, confirmed the story and said, “Yes, we are gearing up to launch the Grande Punto Sport by June-end and 1.4 T-jet Linea by the end of this year. The move has been necessitated because while unveiling these models at the Auto Expo, visitors gave a thumping response to the model. Furthermore, there are a lot of requests at our dealer’s end.” He added, “We are working and expect to roll out Punto’s CNG variant by the end of this fiscal year.”
