Since its launch in March, the Ford Figo has set the sales charts on fire. Ford has so far sold 17,000 units and still has a backlog of 7,000 units (That’s 24,000 bookings in all). Ford will also recruit 1,000 additional shop floor workmen for the second shift. Unable to satisfy demand for the Figo, Ford’s second shift will take annual production to 1.40 lakh units from the current 1 lakh units.
Ford India Managing Director Michael Boneham told
“The Ford Figo has a capacity of one lakh units and with the addition of second shift, it will go up to 1.40 lakh,”
Ford has even commenced exports of the Figo to South Africa. Ford plans to make India a hub for manufacturing small cars. Ford exported 1,200 units of the Figo to Durban today as CBU. If you think that the Figo is a hit in India, then know that the Figo has received over 5000 bookings in South Africa as well. Ford are also looking at exporting the Figo to other new markets in the future although Boneham refused to mention the destinations. Ford already sells the Fiesta as Ikon in South Africa.
