Ford Figo prices; Price war not over yet

It has been a long wait after Ford revealed its Figo in September 2009. With Ford Figo’s official website also running, it was about time the prices were announced. The wait was worth it and Ford has redefined the pricing for large hatchbacks with the base petrol Figo starting at just 3.6 Lakh rupees Ex-Delhi! For the complete list, hit the jump. The car is already available for display at Ford’s dealerships and reports sat that deliveries will start in two weeks time. Bookings are open for the Figo although no test drives are available at the moment.

The Figo is available with either a 1.2L Duratec (ROCAM) Petrol or the brilliant 1.4 TDCi diesel already available in the Fiesta. Based on the previous generation European Fiesta platform, the India Figo was developed with the help of Ford Australia (much like the Ikon and the Fiesta sedan). The brilliant TDCi diesel is the pick of the range and this refined powerplant produces a decent 68bhp @ 4000rpm and more importantly, 160Nm of torque at just 2000rpm. What will excite buyers is the refinement and fuel efficiency of this unit. The rather unexciting petrol is the downsized unit as found in the Fiesta and produces a meagre 70bhp @ 6250rpm and 104Nm of torque at a rather high 4000rpm.

Figo is available in 8 variants in all. The prices are

1.2L Duratec LXI – Rs 3.6 lakhs

1.2L Duratec EXI – Rs 3.85 lakhs

1.2L Duratec SXI – Rs 4.20 lakhs

1.2L Duratec Titanium – Rs 4.50 lakhs

1.4L TDCi LXI – Rs 4.5 lakhs

1.4L TDCi EXI – Rs 4.75 lakhs

1.4L TDCi SXI – Rs 5.15 lakhs

1.4L TDCi Titanium – Rs 5.45 lakhs

At this price, the Figo undercuts the Swift by a margin of close to Rs 25,000, especially the diesel model. At this price, the Figo is set to be the best value for money hatchback, more so than the Beat which is considerably smaller. Indian customers looking for a hatchback are the most pampered lot with so many choices! Its still not over though, lots of hatchbacks more to come.

All models are available in a choice of 7 colours – Diamond white, Panther Black, Moondust Silver, Chille, Sea Grey, Squeeze and Colorad Red. Moreover, Ford has invested over US$500 million in its Chennai plant to ramp up capacity to 200,000 units (from 100,000) specially for the Figo. Moreover, Ford has taken the initiative to ramp up its dealer network as well by opening 28 dealerships in a single day.

Ford was even caught testing its next-gen Fiesta hatchback in Chennai. All in all, we expect a fiercely fought battle in the hatchback segment. Lets wait for the eventual winner.
