Most of us could recall one of the main reason behind GM’s bankruptcy was the presence of innumerable platforms and very few models using them – This resulted in huge losses due tot he huge investments made for each platform. GM has now learned its lesson and the fruit of its wisdom could result in some interesting cars on its present platforms. One of the models of importance to India will be an all new 4 door coupe based on the Cruze platform and a second model, probably, the most important being the Cruze SS.
The Cruze is based on GM’s acclaimed Delta platform and these models could easily fit in considering the fact that the SS would require a little bit of performance modifications and minimal changes to the platform, the 4 door coupe will follow the theme set by the Mercedes Benz CLS and Volkswagen Passat CC, both of which are based on their more ‘civilised’ counterparts, the E-class and Passat respectively.
GM will also base the next-gen Camaro, Cadillac ATS and the successor tot he CTS on the same platform thereby saving costs. The advantage of such sharing would mean the same mechanicals, wheelbase etc with just a few minor changes that would give GM Economies of scale. The stylish and upmarket coupe would require additional modifications. Both the new variants however, would require boosted engines and this would be solved by the introduction of a turbocharged 2.0L inline four shared with other GM group models that would produce close to 260bhp.
With so much power, GM is likely to borrow the all wheel drive system from the larger Epsilon platform. So, the final question – When? We are not quite sure but as reported by Motortrend, we could expect the models sometime in 2012. Stay tuned till then. Lots more to come!
