Following the green trend, tyre makers are keeping pace with their automobile counterparts by offering their new range of eco-friendly tyres. These tyres also make sense for electric cars as they sport low rolling resistance and hence go that extra mile which could make all the difference when you are running out of charge in your Reva (G-Wiz for Europeans)! One such tyre is Goodyear’s new Bio-isoprene tyre.
This tyre you see is actually a concept tyre made using Bio-isoprene which replaces petroleum based chemicals used in normal tyres. It uses biomass as its main ingredient which is renewable. It was developed in collaboration with Genencor, a division of Danisco. Danisco is a company that specializes in bio and food solutions like enzymes and etc, and its Genencor division specializes in industrial biotech such as this new way of making synthetic rubber. Danisco has a factory site in Penang.
“Goodyear’s first concept tire manufactured with BioIsoprene shows the enormous progress we have made in using a bio-based alternative to the petroleum-derived raw material isoprene in our production process,” says Jesse Roeck, Director, Global Materials Science at Goodyear. “The development of BioIsoprene could help us reduce industry impact on the environment by applying renewable raw materials in the supply chain and making Goodyear less dependent on oil-derived products.”
Thy tyre looks promising and for once, this is one tyre that even supercar owners would like to sport. Just look at the tread design – I have seen less interesting car designs than that! Hope they make it on a large scale. Tell us what you think of the tyre. Your views are highly encouraged and appreciated.
