Hyundai’s new direct injected petrol engines

Hyundai GDI Theta II engine

Hyundai is debuting its new range of Gasoline Direct Engines in the next generation Hyundai Sonata YF and the next-gen Hyundai Verna/Accent. You can read our article on the spied images of the next-gen Hyundai Accent/Verna here. The next generation of super stylish Hyundais need the ‘go’ to match their show and that is what Hyundai is going to give them.

Sources say that the all new Hyundai Sonata will ditch its V6 in favor of a 4 cylinder GDI engine. This week, Hyundai debuted the 2.4l Theta II GDI capable of 198bhp and 184-lb-ft of torque. Hyundai have taken advantage of the charge cooling effect of direct injection by boosting compression ratio to 11.3 :1. Similarly, a 1.6 GDI is in the works with an estimated power output of 140bhp while returning 40mpg on the highway (US standards). The 1.6 is expected to serve the Verna/Accent.

Like all modern common-rail systems, the setup uses two pulse injection – one at the beginning of power stroke and a longer one once the piston starts moving forward. The same method is employed in GM’s Ecotec engines as it helps quick warming of the engine and heating the catalytic converter earlier improves its efficiency and hence lower emissions. The GDI Theta II produces from 7-12 percent more torque across its rev range than the port-injected version of the same engine while efficiency is up 10%.The Theta II also gets continuously variable valve timing on both camshafts to round out its high tech upgrades.

These engines will debut in the next generation Hyundais in the not so distant future. Wait for this engine! Will be a dynamite of an engine!
