Last month Hyundai unveiled the Concept RB at the Moscow Motor Show and this time around, they have unveiled the production version of the same called as ‘Solaris’. The Solaris is in essence a hard-wearing and cost down version of the Accent/Verna that is sold globally by Hyundai. The Solaris has been adopted to the Russian market by sporting a list of modifications like a more powerful battery, enduro headlights, heating vents for rear passengers, four litre washer fluid reservoir and all round mud-guards to keep concerns at bay. Compact sedans are very popular in Russia as cold air doesn’t come in when the tailgate is opened like in hatchbacks. VW did similar changes to their Russia-only Vento sedan. Read those here.

For Siberians, the cars are further cold-proofed in the form of heated front seats and mirrors, de-icer for the windshield wipers and an emergency STOP signal that activates in the case of an accident. Hyundai will equip the Solaris with a 1.4L four cylinder engine that produces 109bhp and a more powerful 1.6L engine that produces 124bhp mated to either a five speed manual or a six speed automatic. Hyundai expects to sell as many as 85,000 units of the Solaris every year in Russia where it competes with the recently launched Polo sedan and the Dacia Logan.
Apart from this, what really excites us is that the Solaris/Concept RB is the model Hyundai will be bringing to India to replace the current generation Verna. However, since the Verna just received a facelift recently, we expect the Solaris to hit Indian streets maybe at the end of next year. Competition is hotting up and Hyundai wouldn’t want to be left behind the pack.
