After conquering the compact car segment with the i10 and i20, Hyundai’s next big launch will be the iX20 Crossover MPV based on the underpinnings of the i20. The iX20 at the moment has no direct competition in India but abroad, it will face the Kia Venga and Vauxhall Meriva. Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming R/// MPV in essence is a rip-off of the Meriva meaning there are two good reasons why Hyundai could launch it in India – The i20 is localised to a high extent and using the same basic parts will keep the cost of the iX20 down and the compact Crossover segment in India will witness big growth once Maruti and Ford launch their under development Crossover/MPVs.

The sketch reveals the iX20 that looks much like the iX Metro concept. The iX20 will follow the footsteps of the iX35 (new Tucson) as the next crossover in the Hyundai range. Hyundai says the car is “a vehicle with the ability to simultaneously serve as a functional people-carrier while providing a dynamic, fun-to-drive experience”. The iX20 is from Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Germany. It’s the second Hyundai, after the ix35, to use what the firm calls its “fluidic sculpture” design language, for Crossovers. The iX20 will debut at the Paris Motor Show apart from the facelifted i10 VTVT. The iX20 is slated to go on sale in Europe as early as November 2010. India when? Hyundai Motor India, here we come.
