India is world’s seventh largest vehicle producer

Longer traffic jams assured in the future

India has become the seventh largest vehicle producing country in the world, a whole six years ahead of target set by the Indian government. The Auto Mission Plan set in 2006 projected that India would become World’s seventh largest vehicle producer by 2016. Secretary for Ministry of Heavy Industry B S Meena predicts India to step into the top five largest producers by 2020. China is the current world leader followed by USA.

SIAM quotes that India’s vehicle production  increased to 1,40,49,830 in FY 2009-10 compared to 1,11,72,275 in FY 2008-2009. The Indian market is expected to hit 9 million units by 2020 while that number for two wheelers is expected to hit 30 million. The government needs to ensure that there are proper infrastructure facilities and Environmental standards in place to keep pace with growth.
