Local production of BMW 5-series begins; watch out E-class!

After a long wait, BMW has finally rolled out the latest 5-series from its Chennai plant today. BMW has been losing market share and Mercedes Benz have has outsold BMW in the first six months of CY 2010. BMW will be banking on the new 5-series to provide them a boost. Launched in April, the new 5-series will be available in four engine options – 523i, 530d, 525d and 535i priced between Rs 38.9 lakhs and 58 lakhs Ex-Delhi. While the first three models are assembled locally from CKD kits, the 535i is a CBU thereby making it quite expensive.

BMW Plant Managing Director Juergen Eder said

“The BMW 5 Series is the core product in our model range and has significantly contributed to the image and success of BMW in India. We are confident that the new BMW 5 Series produced in Chennai will further increase our momentum in the Indian luxury car segment,”

With the production already underway, BMW will begin deliveries by the end of this month. BMW will hope to improve on the already impressive count of 3,700 5-series already running on Indian roads since its launch in 2007.
