Mahindra-Renault offering 50,000 discounts on Logan; Could it be discontinued?

Every automobile manufacturer in India, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata and the lot have raised their prices/announced hikes due to the increase in taxes and raw material costs. The upgradation to Bharat Stage-4 will also add to the hike. Mahindra-Renault seems to buck the trend with the Logan being offered at a massive discount of Rs 50,000 right away. Both the petrol and diesel are available with a discount with the diesel fetching a lower discount.

This begs the question – With Mahindra calling back its top brass from the JV, we are forced to think if the JV is about to end with the last batch of Logans being pushed off at a discount. We are unsure of the above statement and is mere speculation but only one man can clear this doubt. Carlos Ghosn, CEO of the Renault-Nissan alliance will attend to the media on the 16th, which is when everything will become clear. He is on a trip to inaugurate the alliance’s plant at Oragadam, near Chennai. The plant will start manufacturing the supermini Micra which will go on sale in a few months time.

“A discount of Rs 50,000 is offered on both diesel and petrol variants and is valid till the end of this month,” , a dealer based in Delhi has reported but you dont need to go that far, the website itself carries an ad that says “Logan Petrol prices dropped by Rs 50,000”. The diesel is offered with a discount of around Rs 18,000 although the amount varies depending on the location of the dealerships and variants. The Logan has had a bad 2009 with just 4,981 units sold in the period Apr-Feb 2009-10, which is a massive 60.03% down year-on-year. In February, Mahindra Renault announced that they would announce the future of their JV within 30-45 days and we think that day is the 16th of this month. Stay tuned to Wheelosphere for all the news from Carlos Ghosn’s press meet.
