Lighter Marutis coming in the future

Maruti Suzuki will produce lighter and more fuel efficient cars by 2012 as the firm plans to make use of high strength steel in its future models. This will also help reduce carbon emissions, which is vital in carbon-conscious markets like Europe. So how does high strength steel reduce weight? Well, compared to normal steel, you can use thinner sheets without any loss in strength. The A-star already makes use of high strength steel which has helped Maruti cut down on CO2 from 150g/km to 109. The weight of the chassis has been reduced by 150kgs as a result.

Maruti currently consumes 6 lakh million tonnes of steel per annum and 50% of it is imported from Japan and Korea. 15-20% of imports are high strength steel. Better technology comes at a price and using HSS would bump up costs by 15-20%.
