Maruti upgrades Swift and Swift Dzire with 1.2L K-series engine

Maruti is riding on a high after the explosive sales numbers of its premium hatchback Swift hit 10,900 units in a single month (in December 2009). In keeping with the times, i.e the stricter emission norms, Autocar reports that Maruti has upgraded both its Swift and Swift Dzire models by replacing the G13B engine (which was a tuner’s delight) with the brand new K-series 1.2L from the Ritz.

With the Bharat Stage-4 norms deadline nearing, many automakers are upgrading their engines. The 1.2L K-series engine makes 84bhp and 11.5kgm against the 87bhp and 11.3kgm of torque of the older engine. The new engine will set new standards for refinement in the Swift and coupled with a better gearbox, the package should get unbeatable. We expect performance to be in the same league as the Ritz, but slightly faster as the Swift is lighter by 20Kg and is more aerodynamic than the Ritz.

The 1.3MJT, which is flying off the showrooms will also be upgraded to meet the new emission norms. While Maruti has announced that it has hiked the price of all its models, the Swift will be sold at the existing price. The reduction of engine size has helped Maruti shave off almost Rs 35,000 on the price of every Swift and some of it has been passed on to the customer.
