Mercedes Benz’s baby SUV, the BLK to take on BMW X1

The world will never be short on compact crossovers in the future thanks to new launches from every manufacturer you can think of. With customers preferring smaller and efficient SUVs, manufacturers are more than happy to oblige. Within the compact crossover segment, a new sub-segment has been established by BMW called premium compact crossover with the X1. The X1 has been highly successful since its launch and it will be followed by Audi’s Q3 which is already under development and this, the Mercedes Benz BLK which is in concept stage.

The new BLK, as the name suggests will be based on the next-generation B-Class platform which is itself based on Mercedes’ new MFA – Modular front wheel drive architecture that will also be used in the new A-Class. Hence the models spawned on this platform will be front wheel drive with the exception of the BLK which will offer both front and four wheel drive options. The B-Class platform will also see a sedan and at least four vehicles are expected to be based on this platform. Internally, the BLK is knows as the SUC (Sports Utility Cruiser) or GLA. It will be more dynamic and versatile than the GLK while being less expensive.

The BLK or the baby Mercedes Crossover is expected to resemble the Infiniti FX – long hood, big wheels, steeply raked windscreen, flowing roof and wide rear fenders. It will be a stylish alternative to the competition and will not look one bit like the GLK. The GLK will borrow its booster powerplants from the C-class with power ranging from 136bhp to well over 200bhp. Higher trim levels will get Mercedes Benz’s 4MATIC all wheel drive and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. It is squarely aimed at the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque with a possible debut in 2013.
