Mercedes to launch R-class MPV in India; 10 hi-res images

Autocar India reports that Mercedes Benz are planning to launch the R-Class luxury MPV in India in the next few months. We already know that the numerous models Mercedes have launched in India but a luxury MPV for Rs 60 lakhs sounds rather expensive. The R-Class 350 will come with a 3.5L V6 engine producing 272bhp (same as E350 and S350) connected to Mercedes’ 4MATIC All wheel drive system. They also say that Mercedes dealers have already started accepting orders for the R-Class.

We understand that being the first mover in a segment will give you the much needed advantage but we don’t see the point in launching a 60 lakh MPV. The R-Class was launched in 2006 and met with limited success and the model coming to India is an updated version that will go on sale in the UK in September. India will get the long wheelbase model that will come with bi-xenon headlamps, steel spring suspension in front and AIRmatic (Adaptive Intelligent Ride control) system featuring self-leveling air suspension in the rear to aid comfort and improve driving dynamics. The R350 will hit 100km/h in 8.4sec and top out at 230km/h. You even get Mercedes’ latest 7G Tronic transmission with paddle shifts.

The interiors are what you would expect of a Rs 60 lakh MPV. It is a seven seater which will come as a respite to some. However, we don’t see the point of the R-Class. Yes, at the moment it has no competition and will probably never even get one but we feel that there are better ways to spend Rs 60 lakhs – You have the GL, Q7 and X5 that cost the same or a Porsche Cayenne V6. Mercedes will even launch the Grand Edition M at roughly the same price! Still want the R? God help you.
