Mitsubishi has unveiled a compact crossover for Europe, dubbed the RVR. At just 4.3 metres long, the vehicle is a compact crossover (just as long as the Indigo Manza) and and rivals Hyundai’s new ix35 and the highly successful Nissan Qashqai. It will be launched in Japan next spring and Europe after that. Going by Hindustan Motors’ history, we can safely expect the RVR not to make it for atleast another 3 years. Blame it on HM for not being able to explore the market potential for Mitsubishis.

Previewed as the cX concept car last year, the RVR is more conventional in terms of styling borrowing its nose from the Lancer and the new Outlander GT. Although not as exciting as the concept car, it does maintain some interesting touches, such as the sharp crease running from the front wings into the rear doors. If it ever came to India, the obvious rival would be the soon to be launched Skoda Yeti which also falls under the same class and size.

Based on the brilliant Lancer platform ,driving dynamics are expected to be the best in the segment and it would be available with 4WD and some new engines. A 1.8L four is expected but a diesel will be added to the European line-up. The RVR forms the base of the company’s new found direction – moving towards lighter and smaller cars from the big SUV maker image that it presently has.
Coming to HM, their sluggish nature can be understood from the Lancer which was launched way back in 1998 and is still being sold. Had they tried, the Colt and Lancer could have easily stormed the market with their capabilities. This is what a poor partner can do to a company that makes some brilliant cars like the EVO. Another example is the poor after sales of TVS that resulted in destruction of the Fiat brand. So Mitsubishi – be warned. Take immediate action or this might just be the end of the road.
