Mitsubishi too tempted to bring in Pajero Sport after immense success of Fortuner

Mitsubishi seems to have finally got some inspiration from Toyota’s Fortuner. After overwhelming demand for the Fortuner, Mitsubishi is planning to bring in its Pajero Sport to India. Built on a ladder frame chassis like the Fortuner and the Endeavour, Mitsubishi is expecting good demand for its SUV considering its tough build and the trademark Pajero brand name. It will offer more than adequate off-road abilities combined with mammoth on-road presence that the CR-V and Outlander lack.

It is referred to by a unique name in every market (For god’s sake, who so many names?) – Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Montero Sport, Nativa, Shogun Sport, Pajero Dakar and the G-Wagon. It is expected to be powered by a ‘4M41 3.2 L l4 TD’ which is an inline 4 cylinder 3200cc turbo-diesel producing 163bhp. Internationally, the power is transmitted via  a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic. We are not sure of the pricing but if Mitsubishi imports the Sport as a CDU, there are very little chances of success against the likes of Endeavour and Fortuner hence a CKD operation is expected. This would endow it with a price tag of around Rs 20-25 lakhs which is a good price to pay for this huge 4.6m 2-tonne beast.

To live up to its name, the Pajero sport also features all Wheel Control-inspired Super Select 4WD driveline which feeds maximum drive torque to the wheels with the most grip. Its main USP will be its rugged nature and the capacity to seat 7 people in decent comfort. The present Pajero that is locally produced in Chennai will be phased out once the Bharat Stage-4 norms kick in and hence this Sport seems to be the perfect vehicle to replace the decade old Pajero but HM being HM, will most certainly delay it by a certain margin. If Mitsubishi has any plans of recovering from debt and losses, it should shift is focus on India. Indian’s love Mitsubishis, especially the brilliant Lancer and Pajero/Montero. So they should capitalise on this and launch new vehicles soon.

If mitsubushi would have launched Montero in India by manufacturing in india at the real cost rather than the complete wehicle import it would have got a bigger market as nothing can beat it at that price. But by importing the vehicle fully they are still costing way above the real value. May be HM is hurting the growth of Mitsibushi

      Dayan,

Really good view point. Actually volumes are not that encouraging for Mitsubishi Montero. That could be the reason why they are not planning to set up a manufacturing set up in India.

Hey Ketan, Mitsubishi India are busy readying up the Evolution X for launch. The Pajero Sport could be launched late this year or only in 2011. It is expected to come only with a diesel engine.
