HM Ambassador, India’s longest surviving car brand will be getting a newer version by end of this year. Hindustan Motors Ambassador was launched here in 1958 and since then it served all travelling class of our country. By 2011 end Hindustan Motors planning to launch first new variant of Ambassador. New HM Ambassador variants will include a smaller, cheaper and will sport an all new look as well. The new Ambassador will be measuring less than 4mtrs thus it will be eligible for excise benefits.
“The first prototype will be ready by December this year. The first new look Amby will be commercially launched in first quarter of 2011-12. We can say that it would be a better proposition. Our aim to broadening the target audience is by offering Amby in different variants . The new variant will be rolled out from Uttarpara,” according to Mr. Manoj Jha, MD, Hindustan Motors.
Last year Hindustan Motors managed to sell approximately 8000 units of Ambassador and this year expecting an increment of 2000 units.
“All the new variants of the Ambassador will be available with an engine size ranging between 1500 cc to 2000 cc,” he added. “Our target is to double the sales to around 2,300 units per month,” he said. The car will have variants which will target families and youth, said Mr. Jha.
In addition to their plans to revive Ambassador brand, HM is in search for an international firm for making small cars. Though company officials did not reveal much details about this development, HM is considering four – five organizations from Europe to source technical know-how, engine and design expertise for developing a small car.
“The car will be substantially cheaper than the existing variants which are priced around Rs 5 lakh. However, it will not compete with Maruti Alto or Nano. It will be in a slightly higher price range,” according to Hindu Businessline.
