Mercedes Benz to launch C200 CGI on May 13

Merc bringing cutting edge technology to India

Facing the beat from BMW, which launched the 3-Series Executive and 330i, Mercedes will add two engine options to its C-class range in the future – a petrol and a diesel. The petrol in question is the brilliant 200CGi motor that displaces 1.8L and produces 183bhp combined with class leading efficiency. The C200CGi will be launched on May 13. The diesel in question is the C250CDi BlueEfficiency producing 201bhp and an amazing 51kgm of torque. The diesel is coming in July. Both these engines feature state of the art technology and hi the jump to read more.

The CGi motor will be one of the most advanced petrols when launched – It features both turbocharging and direct injection and that explains the peak power of 183bhp from a 1.8L, a high-ish 100bhp/litre. The C200 will also be the first Mercedes to sport a CGi motor in India. The CGi motor is a genuine lean-burn engine and requires very little fuel to run when not under high loads. Normally, 14 parts of air is needed with 1 part of fuel but the CGi engine can run as lean as 1 part of fuel for every 30 parts of air making it highly economical when you would like to cruise (up to speeds of 120km/h). Like all boosted direct injection engines, the CGi will offer better low speed response due to the added torque. The injectors also manage multiple injections per stroke like CRDi systems by the use of piezo injectors. Mercedes claims a 10% efficiency increase. The C200 CGI will only be available in the Avantgarde trim only retailing at Rs 32-33 lakh Ex-Showroom.

In terms of tech, the E250CDi BlueEfficiency is on level ground with the petrol – It features twin turbochargers that work sequentially to deliver 201bhp and a massive 51kgm of torque. The engine, borrowed from the larger E-class, has a small and a large turbo. The small turbo (low pressure) is quickly spooled up and runs at lower engine speeds while the larger one (high pressure) runs at higher speeds. At low speeds, a bypass duct in the larger turbo allows only the low pressure turbine to be spun. But as soon as higher speeds are reached, both work together for greater boost and performance. Expect this engine in July.

So, BMW has definitely got competition from Mercedes. Audi are you listening?
