The ruling body of motorsports, FIA has announced a set of changes to the 2010 Formula1 season including a new points scoring system and the appointment of a panel consisting of 3 highly experienced F1 veterans to judge accident related matters. The chances were announced officially on Friday by the FIA. Additionally hit the jump to see the 2010 race calendar.

The points scoring goes like this – 25 for first place, 20 for second and 15 for third and continuing with 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1. So compared to 2009, a win in 2010 will give a 5 point lead and the top 10 finishers will receive points. This takes into account the expansion of the grid to a total of 26 cars/13 teams. Also agreed during the meeting was the formation of a 3-driver team to assist the race stewards in taking decisions on accidents. A permanent panel of three FIA stewards will now attend every Grand Prix, joined by an additional local steward at each race.

Two new roles – FIA F1 ambassador and F1 commissioner will be introduced. A member of the WMSC will serve as an Ambassador at each Grand Prix and will liaise with the National Sporting Authority (ASN) and organising team at the circuit. He will also meet with the ASN President, FIA VIP guests, Formula One Management, F1 teams and other stakeholders and act as an Ambassador of FIA sport.

New FIA president Jean Todt has proposed the appointment of commissioners for F1 races. The proposal has been submitted to the World Motorsport council. At least one will attend each race on behalf of the sport’s governing body and their role is to serve as permanent liaison for the various event stakeholders (ASNs, promoters, organisers, manufacturers, teams, officials, suppliers, etc.). They will also supervise the general running of the championship and its development on behalf of the FIA.

The WMSC agreed that the F1 Sporting Working Group, a sub-committee of the F1 Commission made up of the FIA and F1 teams, should proceed with the development of detailed proposals to improve the spectacle of Formula One racing. The Working Group will meet in January and make recommendations for the Council to consider in advance of the 2010 F1 season.
