VW is unable to meet the demand for its Polo compact while its Vento already has a fan following building up. However, a car maker that is bullish in India somehow doesn’t exhibit the same finesse at the other end of the market. Probably you would have guessed it by now, VW has put its older generation Touareg and Phaeton on sale in India. Its the same story with the Beetle (its selling really well though), although the new Beetle is some time away. We think VW has brought its Phaeton and Touareg merely to empty the remaining stocks of the older model and annoyingly for VW, not a single Phaeton has been sold in India till the end of May.

The Phaeton that is on sale in India has been a monumental failure worldwide and compared to the luxury mobiles from Audi, Mercedes Benz and BMW, didn’t quite make the cut. VW sold just 3,354 cars in total in USA since its launch. However, VW have taken the wraps off the facelifted Phaeton which will hit markets shortly (Indians still get the older model). The facelift will keep customers busy for two more years until an all new model arrives based on the new Audi A6 platform. The engine range will see a rethink with the W12 and V10 TDi losing out to more efficient V6 and V8 units with a hybrid also under consideration. Moving away, the biggest market for the new Phaeton will be China.
