The current-gen Passat is nowhere near the German trio from BMW, Mercedes and Audi. VW are definitely working hard to get the new model challenge the three right from the basics, starting with the design. These are the first spy pictures and although they give nothing much away, we can learn from the sharp cuts in the new Golf and Polo that the new Passat will follow the design trend started by the Scirocco. It will be built on a longer and wider platform while lightweight materials ensure that its weight is lower than the current model.
The range topping petrol 3.6L will be replaced by a newer 3.0L engine producing about 300bhp. The new engine will feature advanced tech like direct injection while smaller engines will also sport turbochargers in addition to GDI. A new hybrid is in the works while an all wheel drive performance diesel will join the range in the future. India will get a 1.8L TSI along with a 2.0L diesel and a price rise but expect the Passat to undercut the German trip by a couple of lakhs at least. To distinguish the next-gen Passat, expect lots of technology to overshadow its three rivals. An example is the use of airless tyres, wiper-less window cleaning system and advanced user interface. There may also be an electronic stability system with a feature that automatically offers counter-steering assistance in adverse driving conditions.
The new Passat is expected to debut in late 2011 with the station wagon model joining the range a year after the launch of the sedan.
