So competitive are the market conditions and so tough the emission standards that Honda are taking an extra year to develop their next-generation Civic. Reports circulating in the automotive circles suggests that the next-gen Civic will be radical. Honda are certainly facing the heat as their models are overshadowed by competition. Hyundai IX35/Tucson and Sonata have successfully overthrown the CR-V and Accord from the top. Things don’t stop there either. While partnerships and Joint Ventures seem to be the order in the Auto Industry, Honda are currently going through all of it alone. Next-gen Honda Civic delayed by one year May 2010
We showed you Civic mules undergoing tests in Europe but they were the hatchabck versions. No booted Civic has made it to the test phase yet. While the Civic was truly radical when it was launched, the Elantra/Avante from Hyundai is the current show-stopper. Moreover, the unavailability of diesel engines is hurting sales not just in India, but Europe as well. Honda recently launched a special edition Civic to keep the model on the radar of prospective buyers but we are not sure how long such offers can retain sales.
Honda have certainly taken the right decision in our opinion by taking extra time. All they need to do now is put that extra time to good use and turn up with something that will truly be a revolutionary product.
