Following Daimler-Renault-Nissan deal that was signed two months back, we can safely expect some more synergies than the ones that were announced. Nissan are rumoured to borrow the new E-class platform to make their next-generation Infiniti M and EX models while also borrowing Mercedes Benz engines. The Renault-Nissan alliance will in return provide LCV platforms and 3,4 cylinder engines to Daimler group. Nissan’s next-gen Z/Fairlady model is expected to get a new generation V6 engine courtesy Mercedes Benz. Reports say that CEO Carlos Ghosn wants to install some of the new generation V8, V6 and boosted 4 pots in the next gen Infiniti models and particularly the Z coupe to make sure that the car meets the stricter emission standards.
As a result, the new Z is expected to get an entry level 4-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor, the same hybrid system from the E300 Bluetec. This engine would provide 221bhp along with a 15kW electric motor thereby emitting just 109g/km of CO2 and returning over 20km/l. It is considered the pinnacle of the E-class lineup. Also available is the 3.5L V6 petrol hybrid from the S400 hybrid. In the long term, Nissan are looking at the DiesOtto engine that can work as both a petrol and diesel engine and can power cars as large as the S-class with just 1800cc. It offers the cruising ability of diesel during highway drives while it switches to petrol mode when power is the need.
The 370Z was launched in India with much fanfare by Narain Karthikeyan but the high price of Rs 55 lakhs Ex-Delhi (the Z retails from just Rs 15 lakhs in USA and Japan mind you) has kept buyers away and Sherif Nissan reports that none were sold in Chennai so far. There is a three month waiting period once you book it too. We seriously think that Nissan should introduce cheaper versions of the Z if they want to sell more units of the iconic Z. Once the Mitsubishi Evolution X is here for Rs 40 lakhs, then Nissan better pack up their 370Z as any die hard enthusiast knows that the Evolution is the best out there.
