Autocar India have got some scoop news that the sedan version of the Micra would actually be called Sunny. The sedan goes into production in China in the near future and will make its International debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show in December. The name chosen for Nissan’s new compact sedan dates back almost half a century to 1966, when Nissan first used the Sunny name for its small sedan.

The Sunny will be based on the Micra and is expected to carry over much of the interiors apart from sharing the V-platform that will also form the base for a mini-MPV in the future. The V or Versatile platform was aimed at emerging countries like India and China while retaining European appeal. However, the new Sunny is not expected to travel to Europe. Engine options include a 1.5L petrol and diesel. While the petrol is expected to produce 100bhp, the diesel is the one in the Logan and it could be tuned to produce either 85bhp or 105bhp. The 1.2L Supercharged engine could be used as it produces as much power as the 1.5 petrol.
In India, the Micra sedan will go up against the likes of Tata Manza, Maruti Dzire, Volkswagen Vento, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna and Chevrolet Aveo. With so much competition, the Sunny better have something special to make a mark in this segment. Competitive price is expected thanks to parts sharing and India will see the Sunny in late 2011. However, we aren’t exactly sure if the Sunny name would be used in India as Bajaj owns the rights to the Sunny name. However, with the Sunny now being a part of history and Renault’s recent collaboration with Bajaj, we don’t think it would be a problem for Nissan to get that name.
