Volkswagen India has started taking orders for the much awaited Polo hatchback and deliveries will start from March 8. Currently, the Polo is available with a choice of 2 engines, a 1.2L 3-cylinder petrol and diesel. Polo is available in 3 trim levels – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline with the petrol model starting at Rs 4.34 lakhs and the diesel starting at Rs 5.32 lakhs Ex-Showroom New Delhi.
Both engines displace the same and are 3-cylinder units. So their NVH is subject to doubt. Both produce 75bhp but thatis where the similarities end. The Petrol makes 75bhp @ 5400rpm while the diesel develops the same 75bhp @ 4200rpm. The diesel has the advantage when it comes to torque with 180Nm arriving at just 2000rpm while you need to reach 3750rpm before the peak torque of just 110Nm kicks in. Both the engines come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The new 1.6L 100bhp sports version will be launched later. Indians only get the 100bhp version and not the 1.4L 177bhp Polo GTi.
The base comfortline comes reasonably equipped for its class and loses bits like rear power windows, 60:40 split seats, fog lamps, rear washer wiper while the comfortline crucially lacks the neatly integrated music system. There are clever storage spaces like bottle holders in the front doors (they can hold 1.5L bottles) and sunglass storage inside glove box. Tilt steering is standard on all models as is green tinted glass for higher heat rejection. Electronic anti-theft immobiliser, and VW logo boot opener come as standard on every model.
Opt for the highline and you have a long list of features from15” alloy wheels, dual airbags, ABS, integrated music system with 4 speakers, remote locking that includes buttons for winding the windows up and down etc. The Polo comes with a segment first 6-year anti-corrosion warranty for the body.
The prices for the Polo are as follows (all prices Ex-Showroom New Delhi)
1.2 petrol Trendline Rs 4.34 lakh
1.2 petrol Comfortline Rs 4.83 lakh
1.2 petrol Highline Rs 5.72 lakh
1.2 diesel Trendline Rs 5.32 lakh
1.2 diesel Comfortline Rs 5.81 lakh
1.2 diesel Highline Rs 6.70 lakh

Hey, the polo prices sound very good especially when compared to Fabia. But I hear that ABS/Airbags are available only in highline. Nevertheless an excellent proposition for the build quality that they offer
Yes Ajith. Although only the Highline get ABS and airbags, the pricing makes the Polo excellent value for money when you take into account its build quality and the VW brand name.
