Porsche have launch the upgraded second generation Cayenne in India at a mouth watering price of just Rs 59 lakhs Ex-Showroom for the 3.0L V6 diesel model that produces 240bhp. The new Cayenne has taken on everything from the original model and made it better. It is longer, sleeker, sharper and most importantly lighter and more efficient than the older model. All of Porsche’s sales literally come from the Cayenne – 911 power and handling with four wheel drive and raised ground clearance is the perfect recipe for India. 80% of Porsche’s sales in 2009 came from 94 Cayennes sold last year in India. At that price, the Cayenne needs to beat the massive Q7 and the X5 that retail at Rs 55.35 lakhs and 56.50 lakhs (Ex-Delhi) respectively. The Q7 comes with 7 usable seats while the X5 and Cayenne make do with five.

Porsche India’s Director, Ashish Chordia, told
“We have already received bookings of at least 70 units. This model represents the perfect balance between elegant design and powerful driving dynamics. Efficiency has significantly improved making this model an outstanding trendsetter in its segment,”
VW family cars share the same platform and that is true of the Cayenne and the Touareg. The two cars have gone on a diet and that has helped the Cayenne shed 185kgs over the current model. Porsche ditched the old-fashioned 6-speed automatic with 4X4 transfer case for an all new 8-speed gearbox which has alone contributed to savings of 60kgs. Give credit to usage of aluminium too. In response to customer complaints, the Cayenne’s interiors are a cosy place to be in due to increased space and plush interiors borrowed from the Panamera. A 40mm increase in wheelbase gives more room tor ear passengers and generates a boot space of 670 litres.
Porsche have also announced the hybrid Cayenne along with the diesel. The hybrid comes with a supercharged 3.0L V6 coupled to an electric motor that put out a combined massive 375bhp. Peak torque of 59Kgm is available right from 1000rpm! The hybrid also has the capability to coast with the engine off and disconnected from the transmission at speeds up to 150kph.
To cater better service, Porsche will have 10 dealerships soon and they have launched a dedicated 24 hour helpline number too. “We will open five more showrooms in Chandigarh, Channai, Kochi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad by this calender year,” Chordia added.
