Proton, the Malaysian auto major is all set to enter Indian market by next year. According CNBC-TV18 Proton has been lined up three models for Indian market. The product portfolio is perfect mixture, a small car (Saga) a sedan (Savvy) and a MUV (Exora). In past Proton has been scouting for an Indian partner to set up their shop here. But now Proton is ready for solo entry with the help of some India’s eminent automotive personalities. The official announcement will be followed very soon.
To begin with, Proton will utilize Argentum Motors facility in Surajpur, Noida (Argentum Motors had purchased Daewoo India’s plant which not functional now). At this moment Proton is busy with re-engineering of the above said products to make them suitable for Indian road conditions. Proton is also in the process of sourcing a diesel engine for their India specific products.
BVR Subbu, the former Hyundai Motor India president may spearhead Proton’s Indian operations. Mr. Subbu was instrumental in setting up Hyundai’s Indian operation in late nineties.
