In a striking joint ventures of sorts, Renault and Mercedes-Benz will come together to create a new platform and engine series to be used in the new range of ‘Smart’ small cars and Renault’s upcoming range of city cars like the Twizy concept.
Like the Tata Nano that uses a rear-engined rear-drive configuration, MB-Renault will also use the same setup due to better packaging and lower costs. Mercedes is already developing this platform to be used in its next Smart Fortwo which is expected in 2013 and the Forfour in 2014. Like VW’s new project that will see 60 models made from a single platform, Mercedes’ modular platform can be modified for different track widths and wheelbase to suit a wide range of vehicles.
Renault will utilise the platform for a range of its city cars including the Twizy mini-car and a 4-door based on the Zoe. What is still unclear are the terms of the document relating to Nissan, Samsung and Dacia. All these brands come under the Renault umbrella and it is still unclear if these companies will have access to this platform. While Nissan wanted to slot in a mini-car below the Micra, the development of this car under collaboration with Renault is still under doubt and Nissan might be forced to develop their new platform if it is denied access to this project.
Mercedes will initially supply Renault with 3-cylinder petrols and diesels with Start-Stop technology. These new engines have been specifically developed for the rear-drive platform and can be connected to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Dual clutch system. Following this, they will develop a new range of sub-1.8L engines for their future range of Megane, Scenic, Twingo, Clio, Modus and higher end versions of Forfour. Also under consideration are mild hybrid and electric versions although this is a project for the long term.
