The Ultra Low Cost car project involving automobile majors Renault, Nissan and Bajaj is progressing as per plan with the vehicle slated to hit the roads in 2012. However, the confusion that has prevailed so far as to the responsibility of each company has been clearly defined now. Bajaj will not get into any JV with Renault and Nissan (earlier agreement was a 50% stake by Bajaj and 50% shared by Renault-Nissan) and will merely remain as the Original Equipment Manufacturer.
In layman’s terms, what this means is that Bajaj will be responsible for designing and manufacturing the vehicle while the Renault-Nissan alliance will take care of marketing and sales. It could be sold under two brand names with slightly different styling. This agreement will help Bajaj focus on the engineering aspect as setting up a sales and distribution network for a four wheeler is a tedious business. So the message is clear – The ULC is coming in 2012 with a DTS-i engine. Period.
