What you see here could be the future Porsche 928 that Porsche is rumored to be developing. Auto Express have got the renderings done and this is what the vehicle looks like. Right now, Porsche is just missing three cars in its line-up. The successor to the original 914 and a smaller version of the Panamera. While a smaller roadster based on the VW Bluesport is rumored to be under works, there is space for a smaller and more hardcore GT car under the Panamera. That is where the 928 makes its appearance.
If you could recall, the 928 came with front engined V8 power and was produced between 1977 and 1995. It was designed to exist alongside the 911 as a luxurious yet sporty high performance model. The 1983 model had a 4.7l V8 and 5-speed Manual transmission that hit 146mph and was the fastest car in USA at that time. Later models sported a 5.5l V8 and 305bhp! If this 928 speculation is true, then this could be the 5th model line for the company. With the arrival of this model, Porsche can take on GT rivals like the Ferrari 599 and the more established Astons and Jaguars. It could even be a threat to the four door German sedans.
Porsche is more likely to share the Panamera’s platform for the 928 as this would help reduce costs. The Panamera cost the firm £1.1billion to develop and the 928 would definitely help offset those costs. The 928 will exist as a practical alternative to the 911 as the FR layout would give it generous boot space as well.
The renderings show a near identical front section of the Panamera. While this is good, the rear, for which the Panamera has received a lot of criticism, looks much better in the rendered 928. It is muscular and this is one rear end that customers would actually want. The 4.8l V8 from the Cayenne is a possibility but Porsche is now under VW so it opens up a whole new array of engine sharing with its sister companies.
Pricing should fall under the Panamera and in other words, the 928 is a mini Panamera in the same way Porsche made the Cayman to be a mini 911. So will it ever come? Lets just hope it does and when it does, it will definitely come to India as well.
