Scoop – Hyundai’s premium hatchback ‘HB’ uncovered

Hyundai’s certainly the manufacturer to beat at the moment after a series of launches from the new Sonata YF to Elantra/Avante, Accent/Verna and now this – a premium hatchback (named ‘HB’) that resembles the Accent from the front and the ix metro concept from the rear. However, the HB should not be confused with the Accent/Verna hatchback that is completely different. The HB is a smaller hatchback, positioned just above the i20 and below the Accent hatchback that is made specially for the South American market. It will make its official debut in Brazil only in 2012.

The renderings released by Autoesporte sometime back rightly point out the styling of the HB. The over silhouette and rear end is heavily inspired by the ix Metro concept. The new styling direction ensures that there are enough curves and swoops in the HB. The front is in line with current Hyundais and sports similar styling to the Accent and Elantra. Hyundai is targeting the Honda Jazz/Fit with the HB at a substantially lower price. Since it will be launched in South America, expect gasoline and bi-fuel engines with capacities ranging from 1000cc to 1600cc. Like VW’s recent direction, Hyundai will build a stock hatchback and another rugged version with jacked up suspension and body garnish to compete with the Crosspolo.

Pretty close to the ix Metro concept

India? No way. There is very little chance for the sharp looking HB to make it to India. Hyundai is very busy preparing the i10 facelift, Santa Fe and the new Accent/Verna for the Indian market.
