Sedans formed by sticking an additional compartment to a hatchback is big business in India. If you don’t agree, you better check out the sales figures of Indigo, Manza and the Dzire which outsells several hatchbacks! Keen to take a slice of the pie, VW will launch the Polo sedan, or the Vento and Nissan will also launch their sedan based on the Micra next year. The list doesn’t end there as Toyota will bring in the Etios twins early next year. In fact, even the City-Jazz and Aveo twins are based on the same underpinnings although they look different. The latest entrant into this segment will be Skoda’s replacement for the Octavia in the form of the Fabia sedan.

The Polo’s Czech cousin, the Fabia has been left out of the pie which the brand is keen to correct. The Polo and Fabia are based on common underpinnings as is the Vento which brings us to the space vacated by the Octavia. Skoda are keen to re-enter that space with the sedan version of the Fabia which could be named Felicia. Skoda marketed the Fabia as India’s first super hatch with grand Indi-flavoured advertisements. The Czech brand will be keen to build up on the reputation of the Fabia brand with the sedan. The Fabia is not expected to turn heads but will definitely come with loads of practicality and an extended wheelbase to keep rear seat passengers happy.
Zigwheels have come up with a rendering of the Fabia with a boot. The sedan will come with powerful engines and the 1.6L units from the Vento look like a straight lift but Skoda might not be able to get their hands on that engine so soon. So, a powerful 1.4 petrol and a boosted version of the 1.4 diesel is expected in the Fabia sedan. It will be squarely aimed at the Vento and the lot and equipped with a robust diesel engine, the job is half complete. Skoda should make sure the price and after sales are on dot. We expect an end 2011 launch for the Fabia sedan.
