Skoda India mulls under Rs.10lakh SUV!!

Skoda, the Czech subsidiary of VW AG is planning to launch a sub Rs 10lakh SUV in Indian market. Without divulging any details about possible timeline, Mr. Thomas Kuehl, Skoda Auto India, said: “The SUV segment is not growing as fast as was expected. We have to go down and are looking at a product priced below Rs 10 lakh.”

Skoda Roomster

“We have over 25 per cent share in the D segment with Superb and 16.5 per cent share in the segment that has Laura. We are working to increase our presence in the SUV category,” he further added.

The new SUV will be aimed to tap potential present in under Rs.10lakh SUV mainly ruled by Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari. Two new products and a facelift are expected to join in coming months. While two home grown products (Scorpio and Safari) enjoying the supremacy in this segment, another Indian offering from Force Motors is expected to be unveiled in H1 of 2011. Mahindra’s former JV partner too expected to bring their low cost SUV Duster here by 2012 July and Tata Safari too bound to get a major facelift.

Skoda may consider bringing  a re-engineered version of their Roomster or will select any product from VW’s line up. In any case Skoda Auto may not bring their new SUV before 2013. By that time will Indian low cost SUV segment dynamics will be same as of today..? Will Skoda Auto be too late..? Do share your opinion.
