Mitsubishi Motors is the latest addition in the list of competitors for Indian small car pie. Last week we had reported that our very own Tata Motors is planning to launch another small car by 2012. Now Mitsubishi Motors, Japan’s fourth largest car manufacturer is believed to be chalking out their plans to launch a small car in India. The most likely Mitsubishi candidate for Indian small car market will be eco-car which is being developed by Mitsubishi for Thailand market. The Mitsubishi Eco car development is on fast track and Thai government is providing all support to Mitsubishi to make it a reality. The estimated cost of Thailand Eco Car project run into Rs.1000 Crores, naturally Mitsubishi has to yield maximum of their money.
Currently in India Mitsubishi is continuing it’s dismal sales performance. Mitsubishi’s Indian subsidiary is offering unusual mix of products from Sedan to SUV in the price bracket of Rs.7.5lacs to Rs.38 lacs. But they got repute in Sport Utility Vehicle(SUV) segment. Mitsubishi India is surviving in Indian markets with contribution from it’s SUV warriors. The Mitsubishi Eco car’s Thailand launch is scheduled to happen in second half of 2012. This car is based on a completely new platform and will be powered by 1.3ltr petrol engine. So we anticipate Eco-Car tailored to Indian needs will be launched later on. Our version may have to pass both commercial and technical expectations otherwise it will repeat the story of Mahindra-Renault Logan.
The small car launch from Mitsubishi in Indian market was discussed in last year too. But the plan was shelved due to lack of funds. So now once again Mitsubishi small car launch dream getting wings. As of now there is no official word from Mitsubishi India. But we have a small but a relevant question to Mitsubishi-Hindustan Motors duo, can you give us a firm date for arrival of Evo-X in India? Please read our article on Evo X launch in India, you can asses how we are excited about Evo’s Indian arrival.
