Breaking News: First Spy pics of 2012 BMW 3 series

2010 BMW 3 series spy

This lone picture is the first spy shot of the next generation 3-series (code – F30). Going by BMW’s history of launching a model change every 7 years, the F30 3er should hit the market around 2012. The spy model though, has lots of camouflage and is masked to the extreme and BMW has used plastic panels to cover the design lines.

Looking at the picture, we see a model that is very similar in proportions to the existing model but the wheelbase is slightly longer for more legroom at the rear. Sources close to BMW report that the typical 3-series proportions would remain meaning shorter rear overhang and wheels at each corner. The front would be on the conservative side to appeal to a wider audience. Not much can be inferred from the spy shots and we would rather wait for more detailed ones before we take a stand. The rear of the car is expected to offer the typical L-shaped wrap around lights.

The 3 is a part of a new strategy  in which Premium moves more towards environmental capability. The 2012 BMW 3 Series is expected to offer impressive aerodynamics. The modular platform of the 3 could form the base for more models (read 3 series GT) and this would lower costs. The 3 will also get the latest from the Efficient Dynamics package with an all new 3-cylinder engine in active hybrid mode connected to an electric motor as well as lightweight resistance tires , aerodynamically designed alloy wheels , BMW active aerodynamics , solar roof panel for extra energy efficiency in the use of interior controls , Brake energy regeneration , stop start technology , pre-heating technology for the engine, gearbox and differential.”

Many of the technology powering the new 3 Series, such as the climate control system or telematics, will be completely re-engineered. The car will make its debut in 2011 with sales commencing in 2012 with the Indian launch immediately after that.
