Stefan GP want to join 2010 F1 season

Stefan GP, the Serbian team that took over the assets of the ex-Toyota F1 team have been requesting the FIA to provide them with a slot on the 2010 grid. Team owner Zoran Stefanovich wants the government-backed team to be a 14th entry for the 2010 campaign. Stefan GP have put forward a point that the team hopes to fill a gap ‘if’ US F1 or Campos Meta fail to make it for the 2010 season. Moreover, Stefan GP has received strong support from ex-head Bernie Eccelstone.

But Stefanovich said: “We think [expanding to 14 teams is the best way to solve the problem.” Stefan GP who have the assets of Toyota F1, also have the 2010 F1 car developed by Toyota. Stefan GP are aiming to privately test for the first time in Portugal later this month.  Their chances of joining the grid appeared to improve recently, when F1 commercial rights controller Bernie Ecclestone said he did not expect either Campos Meta or USF1 to be on the grid for the first race of the season.

Going forward, Eccelstone said that he had spoken to the Serbian government and as a consequence, the financial backing has been promised and this would help Stefan GP run through the 2010 season. Stefan are expected to announce their driver line-up shortly, with Kazuki Nakajima, Ralf Schumacher and Christian Klein among those believed to be under consideration. The team have even sent some equipment to Bahrain in preparation for a late entry.

If there are 14 teamsn, then this would take the total number of cars to 28 making it one of the most exciting seasons ever.
