Suzuki Malaysia Automobile (SMA) has launched the A-star/Alto in Malaysia. The Malaysian model is exported from India as a CBU, which is the global production hub for the A-star/Alto. The A-star competes with the likes of the i10 and Peroduo Viva in Malaysia. However, what is of importance to us is the launch of the Automatic variant of the A-star in Malaysia. The K10B engine produces 67bhp and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a conventional 4-speed torque converter automatic.

Suzuki recalls 10000 Automatic versions of Altos in Europe May 2010
The A-star automatic weights 915kgs (around 40kgs more than an equivalent manual variant). The gated shift system is similar to automatic Swifts available abroad. The A-star is available in three trim levels in Malaysia and the automatic variant (GLX) retails for RM 49,998 (OTR Malaysia excluding Insurance) which equates to around Rs 740,000 at current exchange rates. However, that figure could come down to half as much in India when you subtract import taxes, logistics and other local Malaysian taxes. We expect the automatic variant of the A-star to cost around Rs 3.7 lakhs Ex-Delhi for the base variant when it hits Indian roads very soon.

We would like to see a basic A-star Auto for city commuting to take on the i10. Launching the Auto in two trim levels makes more sense. Let’s hope the base model costs Rs 3.7 lakhs.
