Automatic version of A-star coming soon

Wheelosphere has got news from genuine sources that Maruti Suzuki will launch their fun to drive small car, the A-star with an automatic transmission. The A-star has not set the sales charts on fire so far but the introduction of an automatic might just sweeten the deal for those looking for a hassle-free city car. Currently, the i10 and the i20 are the only two cars available with an automatic transmission in the small car segment. While the i10 retails for over 5 lakhs (on-road) for the base Automatic, the i20 is out of contention retailing at well over Rs 8.5 lakhs on-road.

Suzuki recalls 10,000 Automatic versions of Altos in Europe

May 14th, 2010

Suzuki Motor Corp is recalling the automatic transmission variants of its compact car Alto (A-Star to Indians) in Europe. Indian A-Stars are safe as Suzuki only sells manual versions in India. Although the exact reason and nature of complaint is not known, the recall is aimed at fixing ‘faulty transmission’. The automatic version only accounts for 10% of sales of the Alto in Europe and a total of 100,000 Altos were sold in Europe last year. No news on the Nissan Pixo is available to us right now although if the Pixo was ever sold with an automatic gearbox, then it would also be a part of the recall too. Suzuki had earlier recalled its Alto/A-Star globally to fix a faulty fuel pump gasket.

Hyundai i10 eats 19.8km of road for every litre of petrol

May 14th, 2010

Hyundai has ended Maruti’s domination of topping the fuel efficiency charts with its 1.2L Kappa engine i10. The new Bharat Stage-4 version of this engine has achieved an amazing 19.8km/l when undergoing certification at ARAI. This makes it the most fuel efficient petrol engine car behind the Tata Nano. For a comparison, the BS III A-Star managed 19.6km/l and we have to wait for the BS IV results of the K-Series engine.  To add to the delight, i10 has also become the best selling model in India in the ‘above 1000cc category’ beating the WagonR.

During FY 2009-2010, Hyundai shifted 149,242 i10s out of Indian dealerships breaking all the previous records. Commenting on this, Arvind Saxena, Director, Marketing and Sales, HMIL, said, “The extraordinary fuel-efficiency of Hyundai i10, best among the petrol cars in its segment emphasizes Hyundai’s overall technology leadership in making highly fuel-efficient cars. We hope that the best-in-class mileage of i10 will enable us to increase our market share by reaching out to a larger customer base. We are also glad that i10 continues to be No.1 in its segment. This reflects the confidence customers place in our brands”.

Looks like Maruti Suzuki has its task cut out to get win back both the tags back – ‘India’s most fuel efficient hatchback’ and the ‘largest selling car above 1000cc.’ Will Maruti be able to do it? Let’s wait and watch.

Nissan looking for a new small car partner

February 15th, 2010

Japan’s third largest car manufacturer, Nissan has revealed that it will be looking for a partner to manufacture small cars for the European market. Presently, Nissan’s smallest car is the Micra followed by the highly acclaimed Note. However, look closely and there is a gap under the all new Micra which is presently occupied by the Pixo. The Pixo is actually Maruti Suzuki’s A-star (Alto to the rest of the world) with a different nose. With VW taking a majority stake in Suzuki, the duo might just stop the supply of Pixos to Nissan. This will mean searching for a new partner but this is what we ask Nissan – Is it really necessary?
