We kept you updated on the VW Jetta by showing you the teaser that VW had put up and now, we have the real deal in the form of the new Jetta which has been unveiled today. Crucially, this model has lost the Golf with a boot look and now looks mature and balanced and VW say that the new Jetta has been re-engineered with so many changes that it is now a standalone model like the Passat CC and Tiguan. As expected, the new Jetta is based on the New Compact Coupe concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show in January this year and shares its underpinnings with the Golf.
“The new Jetta will no longer share any body components with the Golf. It will be a vehicle type that is just as independent as a CC or Tiguan,” says VW. While the front end resembles VWs of this age, we found the rear to be too sharing a bit too much with Audis. Powertrain options have seen a jump as well with the new Jetta getting a 1.2L soft-turbo TSi that packs a potent 108bhp. Rest of the engines and transmissions (manual and DSG are available) remain the same with minor tweaks to boost power and economy.
Interiors have seen a major revamp sharing their designs with the Passat CC and Golf. There is lots of kit from Navigation to Bluetooth and so on. VW hasnt released the official pricing but it is expected to be cheaper than the outgoing model at Rs 8 lakhs (in USA). It will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. While there is no news as to when the new Jetta will reach India, you can safely expect it by end 2010 to early 2011 in CKD form to keep costs down. VW need to push the launch of the new Jetta as the current one is facing heavy competition from the likes of its sister Laura and theĀ Chevrolet Cruze.
