Nano, the little master put Tata Motors in global automobile market by displaying indigenous engineering skills that made impossible targets possible. In 2007 another major step Tata Motors took was takeover of troubled British marquee Jaguar – Land Rover by offering a hefty sum of $2.3 billion. We think Tata Nano was more successful interms of bringing global interest to India as a place for automotive engineering and manufacturing hub. After Nano launching in India, Tata Motors is now ready with sufficient production capacity, the demand is not picking up as expected due to various reasons. Understanding this fact Tata Motors now planning to give a major revival to brand “Tata Nano.”
Tata Motors recently issued an optional safety upgrade for Nano cars already plying on our roads. Prior to that Tata had initiated a major marketing campaign by offering Nano cars in exchange of two wheelers. In continuation to this program now Tata Motors wants to make transition from two wheeler to four wheeler much easier. To make facilitate two wheeler owner to buy their first four wheeler, Tata Motors is planning to open additional Nano outlets across the country.
“A closer analysis showed that two-wheeler owners who want to buy Nano are wary of visiting automotive dealerships. Most of them do not have even driving licence and need special assistance and guidance. Therefore, we have decided to set up about 800 Nano outlets in the country by March next.” said Mr R. Ramakrishnan, Vice-President – Commercial, Passenger Car Business Unit, Tata Motors.
“This will be supported by a tie-up with a clutch of banks offering attractive finance schemes making Nano more affordable,” he added.
Tata Motors is now equipped with infrastructure to meet customer demand. They have already tooled up their plants in Pune, Uttarakhand and Nano’s mother plant in Sanand, Gujarat. All plants put together 2.5lacs Nanos can be manufactured annually. Till date Tata Motors has sold around 67,000 units of Nano. According to earlier studies, major chunk of projected Tata Nano customers were first time car buyers but the reality is altogether different. According to Mr.Ramakrishnan majority of the Nano customers have already owned a car.
That finding uncovers a huge potential for Nano and Tata Motors, let us see how they are going to tap this segment.
In addition to the current offering, Tata Nano will get more variants. It includes a range more powerful Tata Nano 800cc and Tata Nan 1000cc and more alternate fuel options. Tata Motors has invested a lot of money is developing Nano platform, hope they will easily recover that huge some easily. Stay tuned for more updates.
