The India-built Nano will be on display in Cooper-Hewitt’s Great Hall, accompanied by diagrams and a short film describing the little car’s journey right from idea to design to production. It was confirmed by the Smithsonian Institution announced Friday.

‘Nano’ refers to technology and studies dealing with sizes one-tenth the width of human hair. Here though, it refers to small size, low price and high technology. Many say that it follows in the footsteps of the Model-T Ford, VW Beetle, Citroen 2CV and the original Fiat 500. It is accessible to most people in India and that speaks a lot. Mass-production-large numbers is the mantra. “Cooper-Hewitt’s mission is to present the very latest developments in design and technology and the Tata Nano introduces more families in India to the new world of affordable and safer mobility,” said Cara McCarty, curatorial director of the museum.

“We’re eager to display the Tata Nano at the museum, where many visitors will see it for the first time.” The Nano is mainly targeted at families travelling on motorbikes and those who havent been able to afford a car. Billed as “the people’s car,” the base model starts at $2,200 in India and can accommodate up to five adults. Referred to as ‘One man’s dream’, it indeed was and it was his vision to give something to the people of India that had led to this landmark car.
