The little Tata Nano has won a prestigious award – the Indian car of the year 2010. We hope the Nano has enough space inside it to store all its trophies! In its 5th year now, the ICOTY was formed by India’s leading journalists on the lines of COTY USA, Japan and Europe. We must also mention JK tyres’ special support for the event.
All cars and bikes launched in India over the last calendar year are eligible to compete for the award. The jury, as we mentioned consist of 11 leading auto journalists from India and they get together to vote for what they think is the best car launched in India. All the cars are rated on a wide variety of parameters and the evaluation system is on-par with the World car of the year.
The Tata Nano faced stiff competition from the 9 other finalists chosen for the awards. The finalists include (in no particular order) Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Jazz, Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Mahindra Xylo, Skoda Superb, Tata Indigo Manza, and Toyota Fortuner. The Nano accumulated a total of 63 points to win the Indian car of the year 2010. It doesn’t come as a big surprise though. It is a brilliant little car.
The expert jury members of the 2010 ICOTY included Yogendra Pratap and Vikrant Singh of Auto Bild India, Gautam Sen and Bob Rupani of Auto India, Bijoy Kumar Y and Srinivas Krishnan of Business Standard Motoring, Aspi Bhathena of Car India, Sirish Chandran and Bertand D’souza of Overdrive and Vardhan Kondvikar and Girish Karkera of Top Gear India. What is surprising though is the absence of Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor Autocar India (or any representative from Autocar India) and Adil Jal Darukhanawala, Editor Zig Wheels.
The award was received by the Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr. P.M. Telang, from the Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre Industries Ltd., Dr. R. P. Singhania, at a ceremony held in New Delhi.
