Well, there are manufacturers who have responded quicker to customer queries than Toyota. After being on sale for over five years and shifting a total of over 40,000 units so far, the Corolla is still available with only a 1.8L petrol engine. After all these years, Toyota somehow is considering a diesel Corolla for India. Well that was a long time coming. Toyota finally seems to have understood that there is a market for luxury diesel cars after all and the Corolla diesel is expected to hit Indian shores very soon.

A senior company official of the company was contacted, said, “As India is an emerging market for Toyota, it will keep on rolling out new models as well as variants. The company is exploring various options and diesel-powered Corolla Altis is definitely on the cards. As a company policy, details like fuel efficiency and other specifications cannot be shared right now. But yes, we are launching it by either July-end or during early August. All the details would be shared at that point of time.”
The only engine Toyota can use is the 1.4L D-4D CRDi Turbodiesel from its Yaris hatchback that produces a decent 90bhp. The engine is quite reliable abroad and if rumours are anything to go by, the official ARAI fuel efficiency of the Corolla Altis diesel is 21.42km/l. If this turned out to be true, it would make the Altis diesel more economical than many small diesel cars in India. Moreover, blogs claim that the Altis diesel is already undergoing testing on Indian roads. Well, from what the spokesperson said, we are just a couple of months away from the Altis diesel.
